I am an experimental textile artist working in an intuitive and conceptual direction. The issues addressed in my pieces are at the forefront of my work, and I aim to provoke interest and discussion amongst the audience.
Wanting to make a difference and bring issues to light is my starting point and drive. Current narratives running through the pieces are the issues and stories surrounding Nuclear Power, pollution and climate change. I have been using past messages from Chernobyl, news reports and several visits to Sellafield to inform this.
Using mainly weave and braiding I push the boundaries and test viewer’s perceptions of the techniques. Inkle weaving is the main method I exploit to translate my ideas, having developed a system of weaving bands of text. These woven strips then either stand alone as messages or intertwine with the found objects that I collect from my travels, creating collages of visuals and text.
Photography also plays a large part, helping me develop ideas or aesthetically pleasing pieces to be sold as two-dimensional artworks.
Primarily I create textile art for galleries. The artworks are very versatile and can be used in different orders, shapes and directions to fit galleries and become site specific.
